Lydia Burgess stitched her English sampler depicting a sweet bird enjoying the fragrance of a rose in the year 1851. The rose has a rich history symbolizing love, wisdom & devotion. This type of sampler is common for schoolgirls of the period to have stitched as their first sampler, then they would have stitched a more elaborate pictorial sampler after.
